Focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy (fESWT) has evolved from orthopaedics into an innovative, non-invasive treatment method in urology.

The procedure involves the targeted application of focused, low-energy sound waves to the affected tissue. These pulses stimulate blood circulation, promote the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) and stimulate the body’s own regenerative processes.

The treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis, is virtually pain-free and requires no medication or surgery whatsoever.

Where is shockwave therapy used?

In cases of erectile dysfunction (ED)

Up to 52% of men aged between 40 and 70 suffer from erectile dysfunction. Whilst conventional medication (PDE-5 inhibitors) often only provides short-term relief from symptoms, shockwave therapy tackles the root cause.

How it works:

  • The sound waves are gently transmitted to the erectile tissue. This stimulates blood flow and encourages the formation of new blood vessels.
  • The aim: A noticeable and, above all, lasting improvement in natural erectile function.
  • The results: Numerous clinical studies show that patients often experience a significant improvement in their sexual quality of life after just a few sessions – without any of the side effects associated with medication.

In cases of chronic pelvic pain (CPPS)

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (also known as non-bacterial prostatitis in men) manifests as diffuse, often excruciating pain in the perineal region, the lower abdomen, or radiating towards the prostate. The cause is frequently chronic tension in the pelvic floor muscles.

How it works:

  • For this condition, shock waves are delivered deep into the target tissue via the perineal area.
  • Muscle relaxation: The waves release deep-seated myofascial trigger points (spasms) in the pelvic floor.
  • Anti-inflammatory effect: The improved microcirculation helps the tissue to reduce chronic inflammatory stimuli.
  • This leads to a significant and long-lasting reduction in pain, which has been confirmed by several medical reviews.

In cases of induratio penis plastica (penile curvature)

Peyronie’s disease (PD) is characterised by palpable hardened areas (plaques) in the erectile tissue, which often lead to a painful curvature of the penis during erection. The condition places an enormous physical and psychological strain on affected men.

How it works:

  • The focused shock waves act directly on the calcified scar tissue.
  • Pain relief: In the acute phase, the therapy can significantly alleviate the often severe pain experienced during an erection.
  • Plaque stabilisation: The progression of scarring and curvature can be halted or mitigated.
  • The therapy offers a gentle approach before surgical options (such as corrective surgery) need to be considered.

Treatment procedure & costs

Duration & frequency: A session usually lasts around 20 minutes. To achieve the best results, a course of treatment comprising 4 to 6 sessions (e.g. once or twice a week) is generally recommended.

Minimal pain: The treatment does not require anaesthesia. You will simply feel a tingling or throbbing sensation. The intensity is adjusted according to how you feel and the cause of the condition.
