Kidney and kidney stone problems

Rapid relief from pain and diagnostic tests for your kidney health.

Nierenschmerzen

The kidneys are our body’s vital filtering organs. If their function is impaired – whether due to obstructing kidney stones, cysts or tissue changes – this requires a swift and precise specialist assessment.

Particularly in cases of acute pain, such as renal colic, swift action is required to protect the kidney and relieve your pain. But even with harmless incidental findings such as kidney cysts, we are here to support you in our practice with state-of-the-art ultrasound diagnostics and calm, clear advice.

Kidney stones and acute renal colic

Kidney stones form from crystallised components of urine. As long as they remain in the kidney, they often go unnoticed. However, if a stone moves into the ureter, it can block the flow of urine and cause extremely severe, cramp-like pain (colic).

Symptoms & Renal Colic

Renal colic presents as sudden, wave-like pain in the flank, which often radiates to the lower abdomen or groin. Associated symptoms may include nausea, vomiting and visible blood in the urine. In such cases, immediate pain relief and relief of pressure on the kidney are crucial.

Modern stone diagnostics

Using our high-resolution ultrasound, we can immediately visualise blockages in the kidney and pinpoint the location of many stones. To plan stone removal accurately, a low-dose CT scan may need to be carried out at a radiology centre.

Gentle treatment options

Many small stones pass naturally with the help of medication. If this is not the case, we can advise you on minimally invasive procedures: from extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to endoscopic laser removal via the urinary tract (URS) or directly into the kidney (mini PNL)

Kidney stone prevention (metabolic assessment)

Anyone who has ever had a kidney stone is at risk of developing further stones. Through specific blood and urine tests, as well as an analysis of the removed stone, we identify your individual risk factors and work with you to develop dietary and hydration strategies to help prevent further stones.

Kidney tumours and kidney cysts

Thanks to the widespread use of ultrasound scans, changes in the kidneys are now often detected very early on and by chance. This is a major advantage, as an early diagnosis significantly improves the chances of recovery.

Benign kidney cysts

Kidney cysts (fluid-filled sacs) are very common and, from a certain age onwards, are almost a normal part of the ageing process in the kidneys. In the vast majority of cases, they are completely harmless (simple cysts) and do not require treatment. However, sometimes they need to be looked at more closely. We monitor these findings reliably and without radiation using ultrasound.

Kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma)

Malignant tumours of the kidney almost never cause pain or symptoms in the early stages. Early detection usually occurs incidentally during a routine check-up. If a tumour is detected early, the chances of a complete cure – often through kidney-preserving surgery – are excellent.

Further diagnostic tests

If the ultrasound reveals abnormalities that cannot be definitively classified as harmless cysts, we will immediately arrange for a contrast-enhanced MRI or CT scan. We will then discuss the results with you at your convenience and, if necessary, plan the next steps for surgical treatment at a certified centre.

Pain-free kidney diagnostics in the clinic

The kidney is an organ that can be examined very effectively using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology (sonography) – completely painlessly and without any exposure to radiation.

Colour Doppler ultrasound: To assess blood flow in the renal tissue.

Diagnosis of urinary retention: Rapid detection of an obstructed urinary outflow (urinary retention).

Laboratory tests: Measurement of retention values (creatinine, GFR, cystatin C) to assess your kidney function, carried out directly at our clinic.

Urinalysis: Microscopic examination for minute traces of blood or crystals (indicating the presence of stones or tumours).
